The Comic Shop Life: Day 4, Thursday (Screaming Nerds, Ladies of Comicdom, & Extra Videos)

11:01- Opened 1 minute late because I wanted my annual Slurpee. It’s hot out there, dagnabbit.

11:21- Read a post from Listful Thinking (as should you).

11:37- Researching for Day 3, I found this. Which, let’s be honest, is spot on.

12:30- Bill came by for Astro City and the last Fantastic Four. We talked Vonnegut, Chabon, and JSA, Once upon Bill worked in this shop. Once upon Bill convinced the owner to hire me as a wee high school student. Bill can take all my time he wants. (Plus we like the same books; everything from Ready Player One to A Tale of Two Cities to The Martian.) We like Bill.

1:36- Customer thanked me for recommendations and being approachable. Awww.

3:18- That is, officially, the first time I’d ever have a guy walk out of the store, thrust the comic over his head, and scream, “Woo-HOO!!!” Glad he’s happy with his long-awaited purchase.

3:30- Small colony of cardboard boxes- 0. Me- I dunno, let’s call it 17. Winnah!

4- Iwillnotfallasleep Iwillnotfallasleep Iwillnotfallasleep. I’m a person, not a bobblehead. Stop nodding off!

4:10- Y’know, ten years ago three women in a comic shop would be unheard of. (shrug) Things change.

5:20- Walk a lap around the store to stay awake. Have decided nothing will really get accomplished tonight.

7- Decide riding the bus is far too pedestrian. Choose to walk. (See that, there? I call it “irony”.)

Since it was an uneventful day in the shop, a bonus. Five scenes that comic book-ish scenes worth watching; all with no dramatic fight scenes!

Yes, The Dark Knight is a better film. But Batman Begins still resonates with me the most. Having Gordon be the only one in the busy police station there to comfort and reassure him? Pretty great. (And let’s be honest, I could fill an entire blog with scenes from Nolan’s Batman films.

Best Aunt May moment ever. And a solid speech.

I wish I could find a longer clip, but this’ll have to do. Given a common enemy, the Feds, the mobsters, and The Rocketeer, all team up against a dirigible. Delightful.

Simple, noble, earnest guy. And he would even take a grenade to save others.

Poignant and hilarious at the same time. A fine dramatic/comedic tight-wire act.

And of course, Abed is now Batman.
